How Will Points Affect Auto Insurance Rates?

While driving any vehicle, people by mistake break certain rules and this breaking of rules and regulations is assigned with some points. Various types of rule breaking situations are attempt to moving violations such as speeding beyond a certain limit, parking of vehicle in the no parking zone, driving under the influence, etc. each of the rule breaking situation above4 is assigned with some points.

When people are found responsible for breaking of rules and regulations, all these points are added to their record of driving. Persons having highest number of points have the poorest driving record. How different states follow points system?

Different states follow different criteria to decide how many points to be given for a rule breaking situation. All states in America do not follow points system and there is no fixed assignment of points to a rule breaking situation.

For example, Oregon State in America assumes all accidents and convictions which could have been avoided, as a single offence, without considering how much severe the accident was. Therefore, there is no different point system for major and minor accident. Whereas, Wisconsin state in America, points for breaking the rules are awarded, according to how much severe the accident or violation was. Minor offences are given two points, while there is addition of some points for more severe violation or accident, and so on and the most severe offence is awarded with six points.

While in some states DMV points are assigned for breaking of the rules and regulations. The laws of states determine how to give DMV points. In the states which put the points on the driving record or driving license of a person, then the situation may be very dangerous and it affects the driving privilege of a person. If the person accumulates too many points on his/her record then there may be a situation that the driving license of the person is suspended.

How points are removed?

Removal of points from driving record of person varies from state to state. In some of the states persons, only one time, can attend traffic schools in order to remove points from their record. The authorities remove points for the minor breaking of rules and if the people don’t break the rule for the following one year.

The other way to remove points from driving record is through court. People may find a legal petition and hope to win. But this procedure is very costly as it requires hiring a lawyer. Hiring a lawyer may cost more than paying the fines.

The best way to avoid accumulation of points on driving record is to drive safely and follow rules and regulations effectively.
