For the vast majority of drivers — 85 percent of Wisconsin drivers are already insured — the new rule simply means it’s time to get in the habit of carrying proof of insurance while driving. Most insurers provide drivers documentation in the form of a card or letter when a premium is paid.
“I don’t know how many people did that before, but I tell people, ‘Make sure you do that now,’” said Chris Toutloff, a State Farm Insurance agent in Sheboygan.
The tickets for not carrying auto insurance can vary from $10 for not showing proof of insurance to $500 for driving without insurance.
In Sheboygan, uninsured motorists will be ticketed $114, according to Sheboygan Police Capt. Steve Cobb. Operating without proof of insurance will result in a $10 ticket and providing fraudulent proof will lead to a $681 fine.
An officer will ask you for proof of insurance at Stops and accidents, however they may let you go, while people become aware of the new law.
“Because it’s a new statute, there will be a period of re-education,” Cobb said. “We will be pushing the education aspect of it and trying to get compliance that way.”
As of 2008, Wisconsin had the third lowest auto insurance premiums as a percentage of median family income, Franken said, and the state’s uninsured rate was just below the national average.
But now premiums are projected to rise 10 to 15 percent, according to Franken, because of an increase in liability coverage limits, which were part of Gov. Doyle’s budget and took effect Jan. 1.
There are people that dont like the new law and believe that it will not improve any better the number of people that carry car insurance just by forcing it. But if you live in Winsconsin be sure to carry your insurance papers at all times just to avoid any problems.
