Senior Car Insurance Explained

What is Senior car Insurance?

Finding the right type of senior car insurance can be difficult and frustrating. There are so many variables that the insurance company has to take into account when creating your policy, and age is certainly one of the contributing factors. However, there are a number of insurance companies that specialize in providing senior car insurance, and some organizations that are happy to help you find discounts on the sometimes exorbitant fees. A person cannot be denied vehicle insurance based solely on their age, but the insurance companies can use other information to deny an older driver.

Because so many senior citizens are retired, their driving patterns will change. Some insurance companies recognize this difference, and will offer a discount up to five percent to their customers.

As with many discounts, if you don’t ask for that discount you might not get it. Another discount that may be available to you is the defensive driving discount. Many insurance companies offer discounts up to 15 percent for driving who have successfully completed this class.

In addition to the discount for the defensive driving class, it may be required by law in your area

for drivers over a certain age to take this class. This is to show the state that their driving skills are still

at an acceptable level. Some states also require seniors to re-certify their  ability to drive more often than younger drivers, and require documentation from a physician that the senior is still physically able to drive. Although every state requires each driver to have a minimum amount of coverage on their vehicle, if your car is older or completely paid for, your payments will go down accordingly.

What goes into approving a policy

Typically, drivers over the age of 50 are considered to be very safe drivers. They have many years of experience driving, typically have well maintained vehicles in good condition, and are  not as likely to drive with distractions such as loud music or energetic children. A senior driver is thought to file fewer claims and to be a responsible, attentive driver.

In addition to a driver’s age, there are many variables that will go into determining how much to charge

for senior car insurance. Some of these are within your control, such as:

  • Make and model of the vehicle
  • Safety features on the vehicle
  • Where the vehicle is driven.

Other things that contribute to your insurance quote are outside your current control, such as:

  • Mileage of the vehicle to be insured,
  • Number of recent tickets or accidents belonging to the driver
  • Personal credit history

Every person who has a valid driver’s license, has the legal right and duty to have adequate vehicle insurance. There is a good possibility that by getting multiple quotes from different companies, you could save a significant amount of money.
