Louisiana becomes strict when it comes to car insurance. The state sees to that you get an insurance coverage before you even register your car. All the transactions and the necessary dealings of the car can be completed only after you insure the car. You will have to buy liability coverage as required by the law of Louisiana. There are three components of liability coverage and it is necessary that you buy all three of them. There is liability coverage of fifteen thousand dollars for a single person and thirty thousand dollars for more than one person.
The liability coverage for repairs to the damaged car is twenty five thousand dollars. Of course, there are several other kinds of insurance coverage available. It is better if you buy all the insurance schemes that you want to buy at once. It will save you time and will also eradicate any possibilities of trouble with car insurance in future. There are insurance agents with whom who can discuss these things in detail. Get to know everything. Understand and evaluate the investments, insurance rates, period of coverage and premiums etc.
Various problems that you can face with car insurance in Louisiana:
The insurance company will deliver all the details of your car insurance through electronic reporting to the Department of Public Safety and Correction’s office of Motor Vehicles of Louisiana. OMV employees, road test examiners and police officers are always on the lookout to grab you without an insurance proof. So don’t give them that chance and always be armed with an insurance identity card or your insurance policy or a signed written statement from the insurance company. If you are unable to show any proof then it is proved that you are not a law abiding citizen. The officer may take away your license plates and your car.
If you do not come up with the proof within three days then your registration will become null and void. Naturally you have to again go through the strenuous procedure of registering your car and again pay a registration fees so that you can drive the car on the streets of Louisiana. You can be “flagged” too. This happens if the insurance company calls off your coverage for some reason.
Your driving license will be held too. You will have to convince the OMV that you have sold your car or you have done something with the car for which it is not with you. They will be convinced only after they are given requisite proofs. After the tenth day fines will be imposed. Fifty dollars will be charged for a month.
One hundred and twenty five dollars will be charged as a fine if you do not show the proofs within three months. After that you will asked to pay a fine of two hundred and twenty five dollars. You cannot suddenly cancel your insurance coverage. You need to let the OMV know at least 10 days ahead about the cancellation. The fines and the penalties vary with the severity of the situation.
